Stop Child Abuse

I just wanted to share this video of another campaign by the always original and wonderful Full Stop Advertisement. As a future pediatrician and an avid advocate for children’s rights, I found this to be very touching and deserves every bit of attention. It’s a good thing that media in the last few years has been addressing this issue and I believe more efforts toward increasing the public’s awareness of child abuse is warranted and long time overdue.

A few months ago, I have attended a grand meeting held at KAUH led by Dr. Soad Jaber, an associate professor and a consultant pediatrician, and head of Child Abuse Committee in the hospital who’s also a board member of many child rights and charity agencies. It’s clearly a problem and better rules and regulations need to be implemented in Saudi Arabia to prevent it from happening.

Unfortunately, it’s late now and I’m too tired to talk lengthly about it but I hope you watch the video and share it with your friends so we can all do our part.

PS. Doha ya doha, the chant you are hearing is an old and traditional Hejazi lullaby mothers used to sing to their children back in the days and hopefully will continue to do so.

You can get it on your mobile phone through MBC Mobile Services by calling 700-522-000 if you live in Saudi Arabia.

The Closing Ceremony

So the 7th Scientific Conference for Medical Students in the GCC Countries (a.k.a. GCC7) came to an end. I personally believe and hopefully most attendees will agree with me, it was a great success.

Now I’m sure there were a lot, and let me say it again, A LOT of mistakes and miscommunication throughout the entire preparatory stage and the days of the conference, but I still do maintain that it all turned out well in the end.

Over 400 students from KAU Medical School with the help of their fellow students at UQU worked very hard for over a year in making this conference happen. I remember the first meeting back in Feb 2009. We had a lot of expectations and hopes for the conference and thankfully we managed to achieve most of them.

Nearly 1500 students from the GCC countries and a few places far beyond too attended the conference. 110 Oral and Poster research projects were presented. 94 workshops took place.

I came back from NYC one week before the conference and needless to say, didn’t sleep or rest till it was over.

I still have this bittersweet taste in my mouth. We shared a lot of laughs and some tears. We got upset and angry and yelled sometimes. We were proud and happy and gave plenty of hugs! Met a lot of wonderful people. Can we say that the future of our college is in safe hands? I guess only the future can tell.

On a personal note, I have decided that GCC7 was going to be the final student activity I participate in. After a long history of being involved in many volunteer and student activities throughout the years, I have decided that this was going to be the cherry on top of what I hope is a big and lasting cake! Now I need to turn my focus towards other things. I’ll be around of course to assist anyone who needs anything, just not in the lime light anymore. Good luck to all the new guys and girls taking over!

At the opening ceremony, giving the scientific committee speech and an overview of the conference’s program. (By Asma’a Mohurji)

KAU Medical School Newsletter released a special edition for GCC7 that was distributed on the attendees at the closing ceremony documenting the conference and the activities that took place. It was distributed at the KAU Uni. Hospital too in the week afterwards.

The online version should be available on KAU’s website next week inshallah.

As usual, I apologize for not posting as regularly as I would like. Hence, I added the Twitter widget on the side bar in hopes that at least there would be some sort of an “update” whenever you visit this place!

Thank you and wish me luck!

It’s That Time of Year Again!

We start our finals on Monday 15th of June. My exams schedule is the following: Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology then Surgery in that order. I finish on th 7th of July.

Of course I have a lot to say about the unfairness of our grading system. 6th year accounts for 60% of our GPA which is rather ridiculous if you ask me because it throws away all the work you have done in the previous 5 years. If, God forbid, I developed a fever during my finals, which account for 66% of 6th year grade, then I will basically damage my GPA in an unimaginable way. 3 weeks can determine my future career course. Talk about adding stress to an already stressful situation!

I also have a couple of comments regarding how it all feels now that it is almost over. 6 years is a long journey by anyone’s standards and I just hope it ends well.

A lengthy post awaits you when I’m done with the exams inshallah.

For now, as I usually ask of you, wish me luck and say a prayer for me!

2nd Stand-up Comedy Show in Jeddah!

Jeff Mirza & The April Fools !

This time the show features Jeff Mirza , one of Europe’s famous Asian comedians, and Rehman Akthar, the well-known British/Pakistani  comedian. They’re going to be supported by an array of talented  local comedians including myself inshallah! You have to watch out for the locals because we simply ROCK!

Thursday April 2nd is the night. Venue will be announced later. Get your tickets everyone.

History has been made in Jeddah!

Ahmed Ahmed and Friends Comedy Show took place in Jeddah last night and it was AMAZING. Seriously, it was one of the best events this city has ever seen. Hopefully this is just the beginning! Those who didn’t come missed out on one hell of a show!

Due to certain prior committments, I couldn’t make it early or help in the organization but I managed to arrive just before 9 pm. The show started around 10. Waiting with my fellow comedians in the back room, I was nervous and jumping up and down in my place. The venue was packed! There were almost 1000 guys and girls there! There were also families, press and most importantly, my friends and brother who came to support me! I missed NbNb and my sis.

We decided that Omar Hussein would go up first to open up. The “marra marra” and “lolz” dude to those of you who attended. Of course, he was fantastic! The best opener. I was up next and my skit was mainly about Valentine’s and Jeddah’s speed-bumps and holes! Us, the local comedians who got chosen at the auditions, had less than 10 minutes of on stage time but man o’ man it was thrilling! I had much more to say but had to be picky due to time restraints! But the most important thing, I MADE ALMOST 1000 PPL LAUGH! Thank God it went well. Actually more than well. Thanks a lot to everyone who laughed and those who didn’t :P

After me came Hussein , the guy in Thobe, and he’s such a nice funny gentleman. When he said 0504 when he first came up I burst out laughing. After him Omar Ramzy, white Soudani, took the stage and made us all laugh too. Stupid ass students! Fahad Fatani also had 5 minutes on stage after Omar. He’s one of the local Riyadh comedians and had performed in the shows there.

After him came Khalid Khalifa who’s a professional comedian and one of the people I’m happy to have met during those weeks. Hopefully it’s not the last time I see him.

Rahman, a Pakistani professional comedians was next and he was hilarious!

Ahmed Ahmed was the last one to perform naturally and he was really funny! Those videos on youtube really doesn’t do him justice. Ahmed man you brought down the house last night !

After the show was done, we all did interviews on Rotana channel then hung out with the audience. I got a lot of great comments alhamdellah. Everyone was extra sweet with me and I really appreciated their nice feedback. We took pictures and just enjoyed the moment.

Certainly, this was a night to remember and I’m still getting flashbacks. Hopefully, this is only the beginning and we’ll see more shows of this sort and inshallah this is not going to be my last performance.

Thanks again to the organizers and to everyone who attended. Thanks Omar, Hussein, WS, Fahad, Khalid, Rahman and Ahmed Ahmed. We ROCKED! I have a huge smile on my face :-)

Stand-up Comedy in Jeddah !

I’m going to perform as an opening act for Ahmed Ahmed next Friday the 20th of February inshallah!

Many of you may be familiar with the Axis of Evil Comedy Tour that included the Iranian Maz Jobrani, the Egyptian Ahmed Ahmed and the Jordanian Aron Keder. It got great reviews and if you don’t know it, then I advice you to go and YOUTUBE it ! It’s hilarious.

Anyhow, Ahmed Ahmed is on his own now and he’s doing a show here in Jeddah next Friday. The location is yet to be assigned. Tickets are still available. All you have to do is check the event’s page on Facebook HERE

Last night, the production company held auditions for local comedians interested in performing on stage as a warm up for Ahmed Ahmed’s show. I went and gave it a shot. I learned today that I was chosen among others to open up for him.

So, go buy tickets! Tell your friends and come see the show because I tell you, it’s worth it!

Happy New Year!

happy-new-year

New Year resolutions anyone?

Personally, I just need to learn some serious TIME MANAGEMENT!

Have a good year, everyone!

How to Write a Good Story

Again I say, I’m not a professional writer. I’m not even a published one. I never took any formal Creative Writing classes although I have been wanting to do that for a long time. Albeit all of that, a lot of people contact me asking me for general advice on how to write a story or a poem. Others send me their work requesting my help and input. Naturally, it gives me a sense of pride to see that others think of me as someone whose opinion matters. I try to take the task seriously but more often than not, I’m not that good as an instructor when it comes to writing. Anyhow, this is just an attempt to explain some basic rules that you should follow when you are writing a story. These are my own personal guidelines that I learned by reading countless fictional stories and scanning through creative writing lessons online.

- Obey the rules of grammar, punctuations and spelling! This is THE most common mistake in all the pieces of inexperienced writers. It pains my brain and my eyes when I see a story or a poem that could’ve been great if not for the shameful grammatical errors. Punctuations are very important and often neglected by many. They make the story easier to read and less confusing. Spelling mistakes are just a sign of laziness. Don’t you have a spelling checker?!

- Never use abbreviations. This is somewhat related to the previous rule but it had to be mentioned alone because the younger generation (speaking as if I’m old) tend to abbreviate everything! Remember, using 2 instead of to and 4 instead of for can only be done when you are texting someone.

- Maintain a consistent style and tone. If you are using the first person narrative format stick to it and don’t switch to other formats. If your story is basically a romantic one, keep it that way. Don’t insert some aliens, a sudden police car chase or make it overtly funny. Otherwise, you’ll lose the reader’s sense of romance and you’ll turn your story into an Indian movie.

- Don’t use adjectives and adverbs excessively. This is also a common mistake because many think it adds something to the writing when in fact it takes away from it. The hot blazing golden sun shined brightly over the blue lazy waters. Do you see what’s wrong with the previous sentence?

- Divide and conquer! Well, not exactly. If your story is long then it would be smart to divide it into multiple chapters. Each chapter should have a central theme or event. Each chapter should end in a way that makes the reader look forward to the following one. That what makes the reader finish a novel in one day instead of reading it on and off for a couple of weeks. Be careful not to overuse cliff hangers because they can get old.

- There must be action! By action I don’t mean cars flipping over and explosions. However, a story that has nothing but dialogue can get boring. The characters should move and go through multiple events that shape up the story. Of course, don’t over do it.

- The dialogue should be realistic and interesting. I admit that this is not one of my strengths. Your dialogue should be believable in the context of the story. It should sound normal and flow easily. You must keep clear who is saying what because it is very annoying for a reader when he or she gets mixed up.

- Keep vulgarity to a minimum. Don’t use cuss words unless you absolutely have to in order to get a point to the reader or if the character requires that. Describing love scenes can be tricky and becomes vulgar if you are not careful.

- Create complex characters. I can’t stress this enough. The difference between a good writer and a bad writer is most evident in their choice of characters for the story. Try to stay away from one dimensional characters such as the evil man who does nothing but bad things and the hero whose only goal is to save lives and be a good man! Humans are much more complex than that and you should make your characters multidimensional and as the reader flip through the pages, he gets to learn more about them and connects to them.

- Balance your descriptions. Describing anything too much can be irritating to the reader and describing too little can make the reader unable to imagine what is going on and subsequently disengage from the story. It’s a hard formula to master. Use details when you want the reader to feel intimate with the place and what is going on or when it’s an unusual place and the readers need further description. You can skip describing some major elements when you want the reader to picture the surroundings in their own way instead of being restrained by your view. There is nothing exactly right or wrong when it comes to this. It all depends on your personal taste.

- If you don’t have a plot, you don’t have a story. The plot is the most important component of any story. A good plot can make people read your story even if you didn’t abide by all the rules above! There’s nothing really to instruct here. It just needs to be interesting. It has to have the reader waiting to see how the characters develop, how the events play out and how everything comes together in the end. It’s best if you keep your ending unpredictable but don’t force it. It’s fine to have a predictable ending as long as the story itself makes you want to know how did it come to that particular ending.

- Once you’re done with your story, leave it aside. Hide it away in a drawer and forget about it for a couple of weeks or months then read it again. I assure you you’ll find many things that you want to change, mistakes you haven’t paid attention for, some weird contradictions, a confusing time line and such things that you can only spot once you have managed to get the story out of your head and read it as if you’re reading a new novel for the first time.

That is all I have in my mind right now. I hope this will benefit someone someday. The best of luck to all aspiring writers out there!
